Piotr Zieliński: The ball is on our side

In a 2-0 win against the Faroe Islands, Piotr Zieliński donned the captain's armband of the Polish national team for the first time. Michał Probierz's team did what they were supposed to do, and once again the fate of promotion remains in their hands.  "We can certainly do it. The ball is on our side, once again we can only rely on ourselves. We need to take advantage of this," says the 85-time national representative in an interview with Łączy Nas Piłka.

Have the emotions subsided after your victory? The team was in a difficult situation, but thanks to the three points we won, and Albania's victory against the Czech Republic, everything's in our hands again.

We came to the Faroe Islands to win. We achieved our goal and we are more than happy about it. We also deeply believed that the Albanians would help us and beat the Czechs. And that is exactly what happened. Now everything may not be in our hands, but definitely in our legs and heads. I'm pleased that the team was able to won three points again, which in the end may prove crucial.

Have you ever played in such weather conditions as in Thorshavn?

No, not that I remember. It was very difficult, especially during the warm-up. Very strong wind, heavy rainfall, it all made us feel uncomfortable. Fortunately, as time passed and the match began, the weather improved significantly, and we managed to get through it. The artificial turf was also a bit of a problem, we are not used to it. But despite all this, we did it, we won and that gives us great satisfaction.

Matches such as the one against the Faroe Islands are a trap. The opponent seems to be much weaker, but on their own ground and with maximum commitment they are able to put up a strong fight.

In such matches, it is extremely important to stay focused. We also went to Moldova as favourites, the only question remaining was how many goals we would score. The reality turned out to be brutal, which unfortunately we all still remember. It was the same before the match against the Faroe Islands. We played against them in September, at home. It was supposed to be nice and easy, but we struggled for seventy minutes. Our opponent's style of play was so defensive that it was hard to break through their wall. Fortunately, today we managed to break the resistance very quickly and it worked. However, we certainly could have won higher, it's a pity that we didn't use more creativity in creating offensive actions. We stayed on the ball for a long time, but we played more wide than forward. This is certainly an element we still need to work on. In such matches, after scoring a quick goal, you have to go with the flow.

How did you feel wearing the captain's armband?

Fantastic. For me, it was an honour and distinction. Playing as captain of the Polish national team is my another childhood dream coming true. I would like to thank the coach for putting so much trust in me. In the match against Moldova I will still wear this armband and I have to do everything to prove that I deserve it.

Moldova, then the Czech Republic. Two wins will guarantee us direct promotion to the European Championships. The situation has changed very quickly.

It has, but that's football. Albania won and came much closer to qualifying for the second time in their history. I hope that we will be the second team from this group to achieve this goal as well. We can certainly do it. The ball is on our side, once again we can only rely on ourselves. We need to take advantage of this.
