Jacek Magiera dies at 49
The Polish Football Association is deeply saddened to have received the news of the death of Jacek Magiera, assistant manager of the Polish national team. He was 49 years old. The Polish Football Association would like to extend its sincerest condolences to Jacek Magiera’s family, friends and loved ones. At the same time, we kindly ask everyone to respect the privacy and peace of mind of Mr Magiera's relatives during this challenging time.
Jacek Magiera was a homegrown player of Raków Częstochowa, for whom he made his Ekstraklasa debut. In 1997, he moved to Legia Warsaw, where he remained until 2006, apart from a six-month spell at Widzew Łódź. Playing for the Warsaw club, he won two league titles, the Polish Cup and Super Cup, and also triumphed in the Polish League Cup. In 2006, he returned to Raków and later ended his career playing for Cracovia. In the Ekstraklasa, Jacek Magiera appeared in a total of 233 matches, scoring 25 goals. He also played for Poland’s youth national teams and won the 1993 European Championship with the U-16 national team. A few months later, he captained Poland’s U-17 team, which finished fourth at the World Championship.
Shortly after ending his playing career, Jacek Magiera began working as a coach. He served as an assistant coach with Poland’s U-18 national team and at Legia Warsaw, where he also briefly took charge as head coach. In 2014 and 2015, he coached Legia Warsaw's reserves before moving to Zagłębie Sosnowiec in 2016. After a few months, he became head coach of Legia’s first team, leading them in the UEFA Champions League and finishing third in the group stage. In the 2016/2017 season, he led Legia to win the Polish league title, and also played a part in securing another league title a year later.
From March 2018, Jacek Magiera managed Poland’s U-20 national team as it prepared for the World Cup. He led it to the round of 16 of the tournament. After the youth World Cup, he became coach of the Polish U-19 national team. Mr Magiera returned to club football in 2021, taking charge of Śląsk Wrocław. He finished as national runner-up with that club in the 2023/2024 season.
From July 2025, he was assistant coach of the Polish national team in the staff of head coach Jan Urban.
