An Important Step Forward for Women’s Football! RefCam Makes Its Debut in the Orlen Ekstraliga

A real treat for football fans! On Sunday, 12 October, during the Matchday 9 fixture of the Orlen Women’s Ekstraliga between Śląsk Wrocław and GKS Katowice (0–1), a new piece of technology was introduced. The match was officiated by referee Magdalena Syta, who wore a GoPro camera mounted on a special harness, the so-called RefCam, giving fans the unique opportunity to see the game from the referee’s perspective. This innovative solution, already used in competitions such as the German Bundesliga and Italian Serie A, allows viewers to go behind the scenes of the action – to see the match from pitch level, follow the interactions between the referee and the players, and experience the atmosphere of the match in a completely new way.
“Sunday’s match between Śląsk Wrocław and GKS Katowice was not only full of sporting emotions, but also marked an important step in the development and promotion of women’s football in Poland. The tests of a RefCam, a camera worn by the referee, represent a modern innovation that lets fans experience the match through the eyes of the match official. We are proud that it is within the Orlen Women’s Ekstraliga that we are introducing technologies previously associated mainly with the men’s game. Such innovations enhance the appeal of broadcasts and help increase interest in women’s football,” said Tomasz Flakowski, Head of Digital Innovation at the Polish Football Association.
