Grzegorz Lato and Michał Listkiewicz named Honorary Presidents of the Polish Football Association

During the General Reporting and Elections Meeting of the Polish Football Association, held on 30 June in Warsaw, the titles of Honorary President of the Polish Football Association were conferred upon Grzegorz Lato and Michał Listkiewicz.


Born on 8 April 1950, Grzegorz Lato is the most decorated player in the history of the Polish national team. He began his club career at Stal Mielec, where he won two national championships and twice claimed the Polish league's top scorer title. In 1980, he signed a contract with Belgian side KSC Lokeren. He also played for Mexican club CF Atlante (winning the 1983 CONCACAF Champions' Cup) and Canadian team Polonia Hamilton.

Grzegorz Lato made his debut for the Polish national team on 17 November 1971 in a match against Federal Republic of Germany In total, he played 100 matches for his country, scoring 45 goals. With the Poland national team, he won an Olympic gold and silver medal (1972, 1976) as well as two FIFA World Cup medals (1974, 1982), making him the most decorated player in the history of the Polish national team. He also became the top scorer of the World Cup in Federal Republic of Germany, with seven goals. From 2008 to 2012, he held the position of President of the Polish Football Association.

Michał Listkiewicz was born on 20 May 1953. Starting in 1986, he was an international football referee, present at two World Cup finals (1990, 1994), one European Championship final (1988) and the Olympic Games (1988). In 1990, he was assistant referee to Edgardo Codesal in the World Cup final, in which the Federal Republic of Germany defeated Argentina 1–0.

After retiring, Michał Listkiewicz was a member of the FIFA Referees Committee for many years. He also held the position of Vice-Chairman of the UEFA European Cup Committee and UEFA referee observer.  After serving as Secretary-General of the Polish Football Association from 1995 to 1998, he was elected President of the PZPN in 1999 and remained in office until 2008. During his term, Poland, together with Ukraine, was awarded the right to host the UEFA EURO 2012 final tournament. Michał Listkiewicz currently serves as Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Polish Football Association.
