Michał Listkiewicz is remembered for his performance in the 1990 World Cup final. In the meeting between Argentina and Germany, he acted as a line referee, whom we call an assistant according to today's nomenclature. Szymon Marciniak, on the other hand, will be the chief referee. Moreover, he will officiate the final together with his Polish assistants, Paweł Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz. The same names are no coincidence. Tomasz is Michał's son and will repeat his father's success after 32 years. History will come full circle.

Szymon Marciniak has had an extremely successful year. After observing the appointments of the 41-year-old referee from Płock, his form can be compared to a stock market boom. He is still developing and setting himself new records, not only in terms of the number of matches but, above all, their rank.

In April, he became the first Pole to referee a Champions League semi-final. It was his eighth match in this competition in the 2021/2022 season. No Pole has ever refereed so many matches during one campaign before. Unsurprisingly, he is the absolute leader when it comes to the number of matches he has officiated in the CL among Polish referees. He led as many as 39 of them, with Ryszard Wójcik (16 matches), who has been retired since 2001, second in the table.

Szymon Marciniak ascended to the highest level of the international hierarchy in 2015, when he was promoted to the UEFA Elite group. At the same time, he became... the first Pole to reach the most important refereeing category. After three years, he was appointed to officiate an extremely prestigious match – the European Super Cup: Real Madrid - Atletico Madrid, which was played in August 2018.

The Polish refereeing team is now facing an exceptional evening. They will lead the most important and prestigious football match in the world.
